Your Ankle & Heel Pain
Both heel pain and heel spurs are frequently associated with plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the band
of tissue running along the bottom of the foot. The condition occurs when the plantar fascia is strained over time beyond its normal extension, causing the soft tissue fibers of the fascia to tear or stretch at points along its length; this leads to inflammation, pain, and possibly the growth of a bone spur where it attaches to the heel bone.
An ankle sprain refers to injury or tearing of the ligaments of the ankle. The most common ankle sprain occurs on the outside part of the ankle. This is an extremely common injury which affects many people during a wide variety of activities.
Achilles Tendinitis can be associated with pain at the back of the heel, and caused by inflammation of the achilles tendon. The condition occurs when the tendon is strained over time, causing the fibers to tear or stretch along its length, or at its insertion on to the heel bone.
Haglund’s deformity is a bony enlargement on the back of the heel. The soft tissue near the Achilles
tendon becomes irritated when the bony enlargement rubs against shoes. This bony prominence can be removed with surgery to alleviate the pain when wearing shoes.
PTTD (Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction) is a strain placed on the posterior tibial tendon. The posterior tibial tendon runs along the inside of the ankle and the foot. When there is posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, the tendon does not function to hold up the arch, resulting in flat feet. The tendon can become injured and may require immobilization or surgical repair.
